The contribution of salmon farming material to sediment accumulation on reefs in established farming regions – 2016 (Jan 2022) – (PDF File 1.5 MB)
This study was commissioned by the Department of Primary Industries (DPIPWE), Tasmanian Abalone Council (TAC) and representatives of the Tasmanian salmonid farming industry (Tassal Pty. Ltd and Huon Aquaculture Pty. Ltd) to establish whether salmon farming has a major contribution to sedimentation on reef ecosystems in farming regions and to determine what analyses and methods might be most appropriate for detecting fish farm signatures.

Clarifying the relationship between salmon farm nutrient loads and changes in macroalgal community structure/ distribution (Jun 2016) – (PDF File 681.9 KB)
This project was developed in response to questions raised by the salmon industry about the potential for adverse impacts on macroalgae as a result of the additional nutrient inputs from farming operations in marine systems.

Reassessment of intertidal macroalgal communities near to and distant from salmon farms and an evaluation of using drones to survey macroalgal distribution
The salmon farming industry has significantly expanded in the last decade in South-eastern Tasmanian both in production (total production from Tasmania now estimated at 55,000 tonnes per annum) and in number and location of farms.

Huon Estuary/D’Entrecasteaux Channel nutrient enrichment assessment: Establishing the potential effects of Huon Aquaculture Company P/L nitrogen inputs (Mar 2018) – (PDF File 9.8 MB)
Aquaculture, like most farming practices, has the potential to impact the environment through the introduction of nutrients; nitrogen (N) in particular can have an impact as it generally limits primary productivity of coastal marine systems.

Investigation of broad scale implementation of integrated multitrophic aquaculture using a 3D model of an estuary.
A 3D ecosystem model was used to quantify changes in water quality brought about by salmon aquaculture in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Huon Estuary in southeast Tasmania.

Aquafin CRC – Atlantic Salmon Aquaculture Subprogram: a whole-of-ecosystem assessment of environmental issues for salmonid aquaculture
The salmonid aquaculture industry depends on a healthy and suitable marine environment to maintain production and profitability. Over recent years, the industry has faced a number of environmental challenges, including algal blooms, jellyfish swarms, warm waters and high salinities.

Atlantic Salmon Aquaculture Subprogram: assessment of the environmental impacts & sediment remediation potential associated with copper contamination from antifouling paint and associated recommendations for management.
Farm based monitoring has shown copper concentrations in sediments under salmon farms in the Huon and D’Entrecasteaux Channel are elevated relative to background conditions as a result of long-term use of copper-based antifoulants.
